Overall: In order to build a truly multicultural library, librarians must embrace the experience as a process. Building a multicultural library is no small task, and librarians who undertake such a task should expect to face both difficult challenges and positive opportunities. In order to grow the libraries' products and services towards Cuban-American community, the library must both reach out and look inwards at the same time. Listed below are a few of the practical steps towards developing a Cuban-American, multicultural library.

Job Title:
Bilingual Readers' Services Librarian

Job Description:
This full time flexible (with full benefits) job includes bilingual reference work, bilingual electronic reference work, Information Literacy Instruction (ILI) work, young readers work, circulation work, cataloging work, and community outreach work. This position also includes the opportunity to develop a bilingual library committee that will work to develop and strengthen the library services to bilingual patrons. The position also has full funding for participation in ALA's REFORMA semi-annual conferences.

Must:
Fluent in Spanish: speaking and writing

Must:
Hold an ALA accredited library degree, or be able to show documentation that he/she is currently enrolled in an ALA accredited library program.

Preference:
Special study of focus on Latino/a, Cuban, and Cuban-American Cultural Issues Preference: An interest in promoting Latino/a library services

Preference:
Information Literacy Instruction (ILI) Certification with an interest in developing ILI for bilingual library patrons.

Retention:

Job Description:
  • Works in accord with the library's mission to provide outstanding service to all patrons.
  • Creates and coordinates cultural programming for youths and adults.
  • Understands under-served community groups and projects positive image of the Library.
  • Coordinates efforts with Adult Services bilingual outreach efforts.
  • Coordinates acquisition of bilingual library materials.
  • Translates as directed for customer service and for creating Spanish language materials.
  • Promotes Information Literacy Instruction for all patrons, especially bilingual individuals.
  • Informs and assists customers with research activities using reference books, the Internet, magazines and the library's book collection.
  • Aides in the development of a bilingual library committee.
  • Maintains regular shifts on reference, young readers, and circulation.

Mentoring:

Due to the ever-changing world of technology, technology training will be provided as needs arise, specifically in the area of newly acquired databases and software. Professional development will be offered in courses directly involved with this position, especially in the area of multiculturalism focusing on the Latino/a/, Cuban, and Cuban-American population. The library will provide full funding for the bilingual librarian/librarian-in-training participation in the semi-annual ALA REFORMA conference. This knowledge acquired will act as a guide in developing a bilingual library committee. The knowledge acquired will be shared with fellow employees so that all staff members receive learning and cultural awareness. It will be the responsibility of the librarian to seek ESL volunteers. The librarian will make sure that student workers, volunteers and interns will receive the proper training so that the library runs efficiently and effectively as a team of members striving to meet the mission of the library to provide all patrons with outstanding service.
